The county administrator serves as the budget officer for the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners. The county administrator prepares the County's proposed annual budget, presents it to the Board of County Commissioners, and facilitates the budget process. The annual budget process culminates in the adoption of the ad valorem tax millage rates and the adoption of an annual budget.
The budget of the Board of County Commissioners includes funding for the operations of County Commission departments as well as funding for the operations of the County's Constitutional Officers; the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Property Appraiser, Sheriff, Supervisor of Elections, and Tax Collector. Additionally the County budget includes funding for a variety of other services including among others, the County Health Unit.
It is important to note that the Board of County Commissioners is not responsible or authorized to fund the County School System, Municipalities, or Water Districts that exist in Sumter County. These entities are separately funded and are the responsibility of other governing boards.
